The Pranava Institute convened an Expert Research Consultation in December 2024 to discuss the preliminary findings and key questions on the responsible deployment of AI systems in the public sector in India. The session was co-steered by Prof. Georgina Curto from the University of Notre Dame, and supported by the Notre Dame-IBM Tech Ethics Lab.

This session, part of the Ethics of AI in the Public Sector Project, brought together a diverse group of researchers, practitioners, and representatives from civil society organisations to critically reflect on the challenges, and values informing the responsible deployment of AI for public service delivery.

In the two-hour discussion, we explored several key questions, including:
What makes Gen AI applications in the public sector different from private sector ones- especially when used for citizen-facing service delivery applications?
Where can values for using AI in the Public Sector be drawn from?
Who drives, and should drive, AI adoption in the public sector? What are their key drivers and incentives?
What values do current community projects and applications center? How can we learn from these?
Stay tuned for more insights and updates from this project soon.
